It was an unusual weekend in Jamaica. We were under lockdown (a half-day curfew on Saturday and all day Sunday) – but the gates were opened for vaccinations across the island. This afternoon was pretty busy at some locations, but reports were generally very positive. Some had to wait, but altogether there were good reviews and high praise for the health workers for their friendliness and professionalism. Many Jamaicans posted photos of themselves getting “jooked” and were pleased and relieved (which is how we felt, too!)
It seems that quite a few of the efforts were guided and spurred on by Members of Parliament. Alando Terrelonge tweeted vigorously (his tweets are always vigorous!) that vaccinations in Portmore, St. Catherine were charging ahead right into the evening. I think he was trying to break the record!
So tomorrow and Tuesday will be more of the same. People can register online or by phone; or they can simply show up at one of the sites across the island (with ID).
We were both vaccinated recently (before the “blitz”). It was perfectly painless, and our only after-effects, the following day, were a headache, some pain in the arm and shoulder – nothing that a Panadol couldn’t cure. I took two Panadol, that was it. I did feel sleepy and tired for a day or two, and spent more time in bed!
So, do go and get vaccinated. Even though this is just the first dose, it will give you better protection. The second dose will be in May or early June. At least, that is what is on my vaccination card.
Over 18,000 Vaccinated on Sunday, Islandwide Vaccination Blitz Continues until Tuesday
- National Arena remains main blitz site for Kingston
KINGSTON, JAMAICA, Sunday, April 11, 2021: The islandwide vaccination blitz will continue until Tuesday, April 13, 2021. The national arena in Kingston will remain open on Monday and Tuesday to vaccinate members of the public.
The Ministry of Health & Wellness will continue to vaccinate persons forty years and older, who suffer from one or more co-morbid conditions; persons fifty years and older; and members of the public who are employed to the transport sector; tourism workers; teachers and other employees of educational institutions; and staff members from the Department of Correctional Services, Jamaica Fire Brigade, PICA and Jamaica Customs Agency.
Members of the public who fall in any of these cohorts can utilize three methods for registering to receive the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by AstraZeneca. Persons can register using the online portal on the Ministry’s website at http://www.moh.gov.jm; call the National Vaccination Hotline at 888-ONE-LOVE (888-663-5683) or register on spot at one of the blitz site across the island.
Over 18,000 Vaccinated Today
Preliminary reports for islandwide vaccination on Sunday have shown that 18,345 persons got their first dose of the AstraZeneca Vaccine. This represents an increase of 5,857 persons when compared to Saturday. Of 18,345 persons, 45% was done in the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA); 24% in the Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA); 18% in Western Regional Health Authority (WRHA); and 14% in the North East Regional Health Authority (NERHA).
For Monday, April 12, the Blitz sites operation continues in Kingston & St. Andrew: National Arena, St. Joseph Hospital, Good Samaritan Inn and Mona Aging and Wellness Centre; St. Thomas: Morant Bay Health Centre; St. Catherine: Twickenham Park Open Bible Church; Clarendon: Denbigh Agricultural Show Ground; Manchester: Manchester High School; Hanover: Hopewell Sports Complex; St. James: Montego Bay Convention Centre; St. Ann: Bahia Principe Hotel; St. Mary: Claude Stuart Park; Portland: Port Antonio High School.
