Somewhat Belated Congratulations to the 2017-18 Jamaican Chevening Scholars!

I don’t know how or why, but I forgot to share this information on our newest group of wonderful Chevening Scholars! How could I? Especially since I met one of them recently for the first time – and “impressed” is not a strong enough word. He should have a thousand hugs (Craig Dixon will be doing Peace Studies at Bradford University). But I KNOW that all are simply excellent in their respective fields. There are some “women in STEM” amongst this awesome group, too! I can’t post all the individual pictures, but here are just a few of these brilliant young Jamaicans (and one Bahamian), showing the variety of fields they work in…

And remember… applications are now open for 2018/19!

The British High Commission Kingston is pleased to announce that 14 Jamaicans and a Bahamian have been awarded 2017-2018 Chevening Scholarships to study in the UK.

The 2017-18 Chevening scholars are Craig Dixon, Andre Hewitt, Rayon Mclean, Jovan Johnson, Dervin Osbourne, Alaina Young, Shannen Suckra, Melisa Anderson, Shari-Ann Palmer, Warren Williams, Tiffany Stewart, Shannee Mckenzie, Rayon Duncan-Devon, Kellesia Ebanks and Sasha Dixon.

Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals with demonstrable leadership potential who also have strong academic backgrounds. The scholarship offers full financial support for future leaders to study for any eligible master’s degree at any UK university whilst gaining access to a wide range of exclusive academic, professional, and cultural events.

Deputy British High Commissioner to Jamaica, Nick Astbury said:

“The UK is home to some of the world’s best universities, brightest students, and most respected academics. The UK’s higher education sector promotes the exchange of information and ideas, as well as the building of knowledge and networks. Chevening Scholars grow academically, professionally, and personally as a result of their time in the UK. This is a scholarship that transforms lives.”

Chevening Scholars share the best their country has to offer with those they meet in the UK, and then share the best the UK has to offer when they return home. The role the 1,500 annual Chevening Scholars and the over 48,000 Chevening Alumni play in building bridges between countries is as important now as it has ever been.

Over the last 34 years, over 400 Jamaicans and a 100 Bahamians have been selected for a Chevening Scholarship and have subsequently gone on to become respected leaders across a wide range of sectors. Applications for the 2018-2019 programme are now open: details are at www.Chevening.org.
