The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) will launch the fifth annual Jamaica Environmental Action Awards (JEAAs) on Saturday, March 22, World Water Day (WWD) 2014.

JEAA awardees will have demonstrated innovative and effective efforts aimed at protecting and preserving Jamaica’s natural environment, including water and energy conservation, which tie into this year’s WWD theme. The JEAAs also award outstanding achievements in sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation, environmental awareness in schools and communities, youth environmental leadership, tree planting, among other environmentally themed categories. Nominations for the JEAAs are open to individuals and groups, from both the private and public sector, including, but not limited to: non-governmental organizations, community based organizations, businesses, schools, and agencies. Nominees can be self-nominated, or nominated by a third party. All nominations will be reviewed by an independent panel of judges including representatives from the conservation community. The awards were launched in April 2010 during the Jamaica Environment Trust’s Earth Day activities, with the inaugural JEAA ceremony being held in June 2010. Last year 11 categories of awards were presented to individuals and groups from across the island.

The closing date for nominations is Thursday, May 1st, 2014. “We look forward to receiving JEAA nominations every year,” says Suzanne Stanley, Programme Director of JET, “the programme is a great way to discover and publicise the good things people from across the island are doing to protect our environment.” JEAA nomination forms will be available on JET’s website www.jamentrust.org or at JET’s offices, 11 Waterloo Road, Kingston 10.

World Water Day has been observed on March 22 since the United Nations General Assembly declared it in 1993.

Sponsors for Jamaica’s Environmental Action Awards are: Total Jamaica, CIBC First Caribbean International Bank, Wisynco, Jamaica Energy Partners, Jamaica Producers and Industrial Gases Limited.
